Perpetual war

Posted by schroeder915 on February 3, 2006

Aside from the troubling concerns Rumsfeld’s plan for perpetual war should rouse in patriots who love democracy, the Quadrennial Defense Review also conveniently ignores what may be the lasting legacy of the Bush administration’s abuse of troops in Iraq.

The emasculation of the military for a questionable purpose has converted the military into a thin green line. Recall that it took many years for the U.S. military to rehabilitate itself after the demoralizing impact of the Vietnam War.

The United States can ill afford to entertain such a grandiose vision of empire. The Army War College released a report last year bringing into focus its concern that the United States’ economic competitiveness might be eroded by the Bush administration’s fetish with a never-ending war without defined goals.

I have a different idea. How about we ask service men and women what their Quadrennial Defense Review would look like.

How about we ask residents of New Orleans if they’d feel more secure with the QDR’s plans implemented, or if they’d rather have stronger storm protection and healthy coastal marshes.

Front page of USA Today has one of the headlines reading “Another 120B sought for wars Rebuilding is extra; more requests likely” The article has a sidebar on War Costs for Afghanistan and Iraq totaling $440B to Sept, 2007 which comes to $1,444 per person in the USA.

All I could do was to look at that headline and those numbers and then think about many of the estimates to get us Cat 5 levees ($2B) and how Dan Quayle… er, I mean King Bush II, doesn’t want to commit to fixing a defective product the Feds sold us in the first places and… I think we can all fill in the blanks there.

Somehow those numbers just aren’t adding up for me.

Can we sue the feds? Can we outsource the QDR to sane people, say, in academia?

Meanwhile, the Pentagon is trolling for recruits with criminal records and terrorists trained (if not born) in Iraq have mounted attacks in other countries and now are migrating to Afghanistan to help the Taliban. So what’s Rummy doing? He’s goading the Joint Chiefs into writing a letter about a cartoon that accurately portrays him as a callous bastard. What are his priorities?
